Vincent van Gogh had his first drawing classes when he was 13 years old. He went to school in Tilburg, while he lived in a boarding house at the St. Anneplein.

In Vincent's time this school had one of the best drawing teachers: Constant Cornelis Huijsmans. He worked according to traditional academic rules in which the drawing was central to the perception.
