Nuenen: In Vincent’s time a farmhouse belonging to the De Groot family stood here. Vincent made a painting of the farmhouse and the family posed as models for countless studies of peasant’s faces and hands. In April and May 1885 he finally painted what he himself considered to be his first fully complete work: The Potato Eaters. It showed the De Groot family at the table at mealtime. Vincent sent it to his brother Theo on 6 May. He also made a lithography of it, the intention being to make his skills more widely appreciated.
